Built in 1903, what has now been reclassified as the Chapelton Community Hospital was formerly Chapelton Hospital. It was primarily a maternity hospital and now serves several surrounding communities including: Summerfield, Thompson Town, Mocho, Frankfield, Nine Turns, Effort, Smithville, Blackwoods and many other areas of northern Clarendon, St. Ann, as well as St. Catherine.
Since 2019, major renovation works began at the facility, valued at more than $J $309 million. The project was financed by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund, Jamaican businesswoman/philanthropist, Beverly Nichols, through her Push Start Foundation and the National Health Fund.
The scope of works included: renovation of the existing main building to include replacing defective heavily infested termite floor, roof and structural members with new reinforced concrete floor and structural framework and new roof. The works also included the creation of doctor’s offices, asthma bay, triage and waiting areas, dressing room, restroom facilities, complete with floor and ceiling finishes, joinery fixtures, painting, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm and medical gas installation and the renovation of a minor operating/procedure room.
A new 20-bed ward complete with floor and ceiling finishes, joinery fixtures, painting, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm and medical gas installation was also constructed, in addition to a new pharmacy. An existing building was renovated to create a modern nutrition department, laundry and linen room, complete with floor and ceiling finishes, joinery fixtures, painting, electrical and plumbing installation. Additionally, a new car park, boundary wall/fencing complete with rubble stone retaining walls and mild steel pickets were also constructed.
